The Gayborhood didn't happen by accident. The bars and businesses that established themselves on Cedar Springs in the 1970s and 1980s did so in a climate of police harassment and legal vulnerability. The AIDS crisis reshaped the community profoundly — the bars that had been centers of celebration became centers of grief, and the community organized care, advocacy, and survival with little institutional support. What remains on Cedar Springs today — JR.'s, the Round-Up, Sue Ellen's, the Cathedral of Hope nearby — is what survived. This tour is the history of that survival.
